"It’s Got to Have Hands and Feet!"
February 28 - March 1, 2024

Tackle two of the hardest elements of figure work – hands and feet. The artistic exploration of hands and feet reaches all the way back to antiquity. Anatomical understanding and a vibrant sense of aesthetics and design reveal hands and feet as powerful signifiers of emotion, expression and narrative. This workshop explores the depiction of hands and feet in the history of art and leads the participant through drawing from life to an aesthetic exploration of the possibilities of this subject matter. Speer is a classically trained painter and highly successful Chicago-based caricature artist. He is an alumnus of Vienna’s National Academy of the Fine Arts and recipient of the Academy’s prestigious Johannes Fuger Medal.

Learn the process of a caricature drawing and the anatomical and formal considerations that create the magical transformation from informed distortion to a hyper-likeness more succinct than any portrait could boast. Participant drawings will be executed in charcoal and pencil. Lothar Speer is a master caricaturist with 30 years experience. His client list includes America’s Fortune 500, such as retirement caricature illustrations for McDonald’s corporate elite and graduation illustrations for medical universities.

This class will offer different lessons each day, including using a knife to bring out expressive designs. Clayton studied at the Cape Cod School of Art in Provincetown where he embraced the “Art of Seeing Color” as taught by the late Henry Hensche and Charles W. Hawthorne. "Drawing Auto-Biographical Comics"
May 27, 2024

Draw on your experience to create graphic renderings of your life. Ajuan shares the works of several comic creators, showing how this diverse group of individuals draw themselves. Students compare the artists’ self portraits with the artists’ press photos, while Ajuan discusses the strategies veteran comic creators use to create a character to represent themselves on the page. Participants will then use the same strategies to create drawings of themselves, and using a handful of autobiographical writing prompts, create a 4- to 6-panel autobiographical comic.

"Portrait Painting from a Photograph"
August 1-2, 2024

Dianne Hebbert leads a portrait painting workshop. Students are invited to bring in a printed or digital copy of a photograph they would like to translate into a painting. The class begins with the drawing and moves into developing the acrylic painting, going over the grid method, under paintings, and finally, how to add personal details to finalize your painting. Regardless of skill level, there’s something for everyone to learn. Dianne Hebbert is a Nicaraguan-American artist based in New York. She works primarily in painting, printmaking and installation art.
